Improvising is making decisions in real-time, all while determining the constraints oneself:
Although it may seem obvious that the embodiment of music in daily practice involves the body, it still requires intentional practice. Understanding that the act
of making music is at the very heart of musicality, and approaching the relationship with others as both a practice of active listening and a continuous flow of proposals, also involves the body.
We all have the ability to sing what we play, play what we sing, or play something different from what we sing, and vice versa, but often, we apply it internally without letting the voice out. To sing while playing an instrument is to embody the sound that comes out of the instrument, with immediate access to one’s own musicality in order to develop it.
This workshop will also focus on working on the relationship with time, which is the very essence of music, -since before it does not exist, and after, it no longer exists- as well as on working on the form and the temporality of this form, while being aware of the passing time. Improvising is making oneself familiar with time; it’s getting to know oneself, and positioning oneself in relation to others.
Didier Petit has been active in the improvised music scene since the early 1990s. Particularly inclined to internalize the repertoires of each group he is involved in, he focuses on the collective development of the relationships between composition and improvisation.
